He would gaze at the lush canopy above him and absorb: the scent of the pine, the texture of the trees, the feeling of spiritual oneness with the physical creation surrounding him. Kirchner's Trees, a series of pen-and-ink sketches, reflects that experience. The works are not only literal interpretations, but figurative ones as well.
