He would gaze at the lush canopy above him and absorb: the scent of the pine, the texture of the trees, the feeling of spiritual oneness with the physical creation surrounding him. Kirchner's Trees, a series of pen-and-ink sketches, reflects that experience. The works are not only literal interpretations, but figurative ones as well. Kirchner's art is layered with images to be found by the person who views it, similar to the way one interprets a Rorschach test.
